What is a stroke?

A stroke occurs when the blood supply to part of your brain is interrupted or reduced, preventing brain tissue from getting oxygen and nutrients. A stroke is a medical emergency, and prompt treatment is crucial. Early action can minimise brain damage and potential complications.

There are two main types of stroke:

  • Ischemic Stroke: This type accounts for about 87% of all strokes and occurs when a blood vessel supplying blood to the brain gets blocked, usually by a blood clot. Ischemic strokes can be caused by clots forming in the brain’s blood vessels, in blood vessels leading to the brain, or even in blood vessels elsewhere in the body that then travel to the brain.
  • Haemorrhagic Stroke: This type occurs when a blood vessel in the brain leaks or ruptures. Haemorrhagic strokes can be caused by conditions such as high blood pressure, overuse of anticoagulant medication, or weakened spots in your blood vessel walls (aneurysms). A subcategory of haemorrhagic stroke is a subarachnoid haemorrhage, which involves bleeding in the area between the brain and the thin tissues covering it.

Another condition related to stroke is a Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA), often called a mini-stroke. A TIA is a temporary blockage of blood flow to the brain. While TIAs do not cause permanent damage, they may signal a full-blown stroke ahead and should be treated as a medical emergency.
